What correction removes, and what it cannot
Paint correction is machine polishing that levels the clear coat to remove defects. The test is depth: if a defect sits within the clear coat, polishing takes it out. If it has gone through to the base coat or the primer, no amount of polishing restores it.
- Removable: swirl marks and wash scratches, light scratches, oxidation and haze, water spot etching, buffer trails from previous work
- Not removable: chips through the paint, deep scratches you can catch a fingernail in, failed or peeling clear coat
Why high-desert paint needs it
Central Oregon is hard on a finish in a specific way. Wind-driven grit etches the hood and the leading edge of the roof. Strong year-round sun oxidizes the clear coat. And the dust means vehicles get washed often, usually with a single bucket and a brush, which is exactly how swirls get in. Most of the dullness people blame on age is really thousands of fine scratches scattering light.
Correction before coating
If you are planning a ceramic coating, correction comes first. A coating locks in the surface it is applied to, so coating swirled paint preserves the swirls for the life of the coating. Correction is priced separately from coating — $550 to $750 — so you can see exactly what each stage costs rather than having it bundled out of sight. Correction starts with a decontamination wash to get the stuck-on grit off the paint first; it is already part of the job, so you do not book it separately.
