What a ceramic coating actually is
A ceramic coating is a liquid silica-based polymer that cures into a hard, transparent layer chemically bonded to your clear coat. Unlike wax, which sits on top of the paint and washes away over months, a cured coating becomes part of the surface. That is why it is measured in years rather than weeks, and why removing it takes machine polishing rather than a strong soap.
What it does — and what it does not do
A coating is paint protection, not armor. Being honest about the line matters more than the sales pitch:
- It does: make water, dust, de-icer, sap, and bug splatter release far more easily, which is the real benefit — less scrubbing means fewer swirls over the life of the car
- It does: add gloss and depth, and hold it through seasons rather than weeks
- It does: resist chemical etching from bird droppings and bug acids, buying you time to wash them off
- It does not: stop rock chips. Cinders and gravel will still chip a coated hood
- It does not: make paint scratch-proof. It raises the threshold, it does not remove it
- It does not: replace washing. It makes washing easier and less frequent, not optional
Preparation is most of the work
A coating is permanent on the timescale of its rating, which means it seals in whatever is underneath it. Applying one over bonded contamination or swirled paint locks that in for years. That is why the prep — a wash, iron and tar decontamination, a clay bar pass, then a panel wipe so the coating bonds to bare clear coat — takes most of the appointment, and it is included with every Legacy Coating. The coating itself goes on last and takes the least time. The first stage of that prep is the same work as our standalone Decontamination Wash. Machine polishing is not part of the coating price: if your paint has swirls or light scratches, paint correction ($550–$750) is a separate service, done before the coating so it seals in a corrected finish rather than the defects.
Choosing how long you want it to last
We offer 6-month, 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 5-year, and 8-year options, priced from $275 on a sedan baseline. The practical question is not which is best but how long you are keeping the vehicle:
- 6-month and 1-year: a lease, a vehicle you plan to sell, or a first coating to see how you like living with one
- 2-year and 3-year: a daily driver you intend to keep, and the most common choice
- 5-year and 8-year: a vehicle you plan to keep long term, or one that lives outdoors year-round
Living with a coated vehicle
A coating needs a short cure window before it gets wet, which we confirm at the appointment based on the product and the weather. After that, maintenance is simple and it matters: wash with a pH-neutral soap, use two buckets or a touchless method, and skip the brush tunnels — spinning brushes are what put swirls into coated paint. Done that way, a coating keeps its water behavior for its full rating. Vehicle size affects coating price, because surface area is the work.
